In my career, I have served as forest ranger, urban forester, and acting forest area supervisor. I performed classical forestry work, including prescribed burning and tree problem diagnosis, in Duval County, Florida. I identified dangerous trees on city streets and highways and and advised the Jacksonville Public Works Department as to how to address such trees. I fought forest fires in Jacksonville Florida. I also served two summer tours of western U.S. fire duty and rotated between Idaho, Montana, and Oregon manning fire lines to control forest fires.
In Jacksonville, I worked for the Jacksonville Electric Authority, known as the JEA (a municipally-owned utility serving greater Jacksonville). There, I was responsible for administering and supervising 6-20 contract line clearing crews on a daily basis, and was on standby for emergency work for storm restoration. At the JEA, I gained hands-on land management experience in forest areas through evaluating and marking timber tracts, developing strategic recommendations to upper management on the handling of timber, and managing and conducting prescribed burning. I was responsible for planning and creating ingress and egress routes for large tract forest management. I performed classical forestry work and maintained and operated various heavy equipment such as excavators, bulldozers, backhoes, and tractors. I established and operated a nursery in conjunction with the City of Jacksonville Correctional Facility for use in remediation and tree give-away programs. I was the point of contact for customers on tree trimming and foliage management issues, and acted as a consultant to city and state officials on tree issues.
I started a tree trimming and removal business to pay for my three sons' college educations. My wife Beth and I now run the business together. We enjoy being outside, meeting new people, hearing about their lives and making sure they are safe from potentially dangerous situations due to dying or dead trees.
